Helping Sensitive & Rescue Dogs Feel Safe
Calm, structured behaviour support for sensitive and rescue dogs - guided by welfare, grounded in understanding.
Steady Paws provides specialist canine behaviour support across Pontefract and West Yorkshire.
Using calm, welfare-led methods, I help dogs feel safer in their environment while guiding owners to understand the behaviour beneath the surface — not simply manage it.
I specialise in supporting dogs as they adjust to new homes, unfamiliar environments, and the challenges that come with them.
My approach is structured, gentle, and rooted in emotional safety — because lasting behaviour change begins with how a dog feels, not just what they do.

Support for Sensitive and Rescue Dogs — Without Pressure or Overwhelm
If your dog feels anxious, reactive, or unsettled…you’re not alone.
And more importantly — nothing has gone wrong.
Many rescue and sensitive dogs are simply trying to make sense of a world that feels unfamiliar, unpredictable, or overwhelming.
I’m Cherene, a Canine Behaviour Practitioner & Coach.
I specialise in supporting sensitive and rescue dogs as they adjust to new homes, environments, and experiences — using calm, structured, welfare-led methods.
Behaviour is not something to control — it’s something to understand.
Rather than focusing only on the behaviour you see, we look at what’s driving it beneath the surface.
Because when a dog feels safe, behaviour begins to change naturally.
With a First Class Honours Degree in Teaching, I combine behavioural understanding with clear, practical guidance — helping you feel confident in supporting your dog.
It’s common for behaviour challenges to appear during periods of change.
New environments, unfamiliar routines, and new relationships can feel overwhelming for many dogs.
This doesn’t mean your dog is difficult — it means they need the right kind of support.
With calm, consistent guidance, sensitive dogs can learn to feel safe, settled, and more confident in their world.
And you can feel more confident supporting them.
The Steady Paws approach offers calm, structured support — allowing progress to happen at your dog’s pace.
You’re in the Right Place If…
Steady Paws may be the right support for you if your dog:
-
Feels easily overwhelmed by the world around them
-
Reacts to other dogs or people on walks
-
Struggles with anxiety, fear, or nervous behaviour
-
Finds new environments or changes in routine difficult
-
Is a rescue dog still adjusting to home life
-
Appears calm at home but unsettled outside
-
Has behaviours that feel confusing or unpredictable
You may also be feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or questioning whether you’re doing the right thing.
That’s completely normal.
Many of the dogs I work with aren’t “difficult” - they’re sensitive, and doing their best to cope in situations that feel too much for them.
If this sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.
You’re Not Alone If…
You may be feeling unsure about your dog’s behaviour.
Perhaps your rescue dog seems overwhelmed by their environment…
struggles to settle at home…
or reacts to people, dogs, or everyday situations.
You might be noticing things like:
-
Difficulty settling in a new home
-
Nervous or anxious behaviour
-
Barking or reacting to other dogs
-
Struggling to cope in new environments
-
Over-arousal or difficulty calming down
These behaviours are often a sign that your dog is feeling overwhelmed or uncertain — not that they are “difficult” or doing anything wrong.
With calm guidance, predictable routines, and the right support, sensitive dogs can begin to feel safer, more settled, and more confident over time.
If this feels familiar, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Gentle Support for Rescue Dogs and Their Owners
Bringing a rescue dog home can be deeply rewarding -
but it can also feel uncertain, overwhelming, and at times, confusing.
Many rescue dogs need time, patience, and the right kind of support to feel safe in their new environment.
During this adjustment period, behaviour can feel difficult to understand - especially when it doesn’t match your expectations.
This doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
And it doesn’t mean your dog is “difficult.”
Often, these behaviours are a reflection of uncertainty, stress, or simply trying to cope with a world that feels unfamiliar.
At Steady Paws, support is calm, structured, and guided by welfare.
Rather than focusing only on behaviour, we look at the whole picture - your dog’s environment, emotional state, and daily experiences.
Because when a dog begins to feel safe, behaviour starts to change naturally.
My work focuses not only on supporting your dog, but also on helping you feel confident in understanding them.
With the right guidance, both you and your dog can begin to feel more settled, more connected, and more at ease.
Support is available whether you’ve recently welcomed a rescue dog, or you’ve still navigating the challenges that come with adjustment.
What Owners Often Notice After Support
Progress doesn’t happen overnight.
But with calm, consistent support, small changes begin to appear — and those changes start to build.
Owners often notice:
-
Their dog settling more comfortably at home
-
A reduction in anxiety and daily stress
-
Calmer responses to situations that once felt overwhelming
-
Improved confidence in new or unfamiliar environments
-
A deeper understanding of their dog’s behaviour and needs
-
Feeling more confident in how to support their dog
These changes are often subtle at first.
A quicker recovery after a noise.
A softer response on a walk.
A moment of calm where there was previously tension.
Over time, these small shifts begin to add up.
Dogs start to feel safer, more settled, and better able to cope with the world around them.
And as your dog begins to change, so does how you feel — more confident, more reassured, and more connected.
This isn’t about quick fixes.
It’s about steady, meaningful progress that lasts.
How I Can Help
Support is tailored to your individual dog, your home environment, and your goals — because no two dogs (or situations) are the same.
I can support you with:
• Anxiety, fear, and nervous behaviour
• Reactivity towards dogs or people
• Supporting rescue dogs as they adjust to a new home
• Barking or lunging on walks
• Difficulty settling or relaxing at home
• Separation-related behaviours
• Building confidence in sensitive or easily overwhelmed dogs
Every behaviour plan is designed to feel realistic, manageable, and supportive — not overwhelming.
You won’t be given a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, you’ll receive calm, structured guidance that helps you understand your dog and feel confident supporting them day to day.
This is a collaborative process. You’ll be supported every step of the way, with practical strategies that fit into your everyday life.
If you’re feeling unsure where to start, that’s completely okay.

A consultation is the first step in understanding your dog’s behaviour and creating a clear, supportive plan moving forward.
My Approach
My work focuses on understanding the emotional drivers behind behaviour.
Many dogs who react strongly to the world are not being disobedient — they are overwhelmed, uncertain, or struggling to cope.
Behaviour support is not about control.
It’s about helping your dog feel safe enough to learn, adapt, and respond differently over time.
Using calm, structured, welfare-led methods, I support dogs in building confidence while reducing fear and stress.
My approach is grounded in modern behavioural science and positive, reward-based training — always prioritising emotional wellbeing and trust.
I also work closely with you as the owner.
Because when you understand what your dog is experiencing, you can support them more confidently in everyday life.
This means:
• No punishment or fear-based methods
• A focus on emotional safety and regulation
• Building trust through clear, consistent communication
• Supporting lasting, meaningful behaviour change
Behaviour change takes time.
But with the right support, even very anxious or sensitive dogs can make steady, meaningful progress.
Supporting Rescue Dogs Through the Transition to a New Home
Steady Paws offers behaviour support for rescue organisations and adopters during the transition into a new home.
The early stages of adoption can be one of the most important - and often most challenging - periods for both dogs and their owners.
With the right support in place, many common behaviour challenges can be prevented or reduced before they become established.
Early guidance focuses on creating stability, supporting emotional adjustment, and helping dogs feel safe in their new environment.
Support is available for:
• Adopters preparing to welcome a rescue dog into their home
• Newly adopted dogs adjusting to a new environment
• Owners seeking guidance during the settling-in period
For rescue organisations, Steady Paws behaviour support can be offered as an additional resource - helping adopters feel more confident and supported during the transition process.
If you're part of a rescue organisation, or an adopter looking for guidance, you're very welcome to get in touch.
Holistic Support: Reiki (Coming Soon)
Alongside behaviour support, I will be offering Reiki sessions for both animals and their owners.
Reiki is a gentle, calming practice that supports emotional wellbeing, relaxation, and balance.
It can be particularly beneficial for sensitive or anxious dogs, helping to reduce stress and support a greater sense of calm.
Reiki can also support owners.
Caring for a sensitive or reactive dog can feel overwhelming at times, and Reiki offers a space for you to relax, reset, and feel more grounded.
This holistic approach reflects the Steady Paws philosophy - supporting both the dog and the human behind them.
In-person Reiki sessions will be available soon.
More information will be shared shortly.
With patience, every gentle change helps your dog feel at home.
